Are you having trouble being creative and coming up with new ideas? Are you stagnating because of stressful activities such as working, taking care of the kids, or other day to day tasks? Are you constantly confronting the proverbial blank wall whenever you sit down to write, or paint, or whatever else it is that you do to express yourself? Don’t worry. We’ve all been there. I myself am a regular visitor. The blank wall and I are on a first name basis. No, really.

Writing Exercise: Characterization Using the 25 Essential Expressions Artist’s Meme by Napalmnacey

I was browsing around deviantArt today and ran across this meme: 25 Essential Expressions, as well as a couple of the responses, here and here.

You’ll notice, of course, that this meme was created for visual artists (comic artists in particular, I believe) to practice portraying a single character in a variety of emotive states. You might ask why this would pertain to you as a writer–but you probably won’t, because I’ll bet you’ve already figured out how to use this meme to your advantage.

I’m sure some of you will think of more uses from the one I’m presenting today, but the first thing that came to mind for me was to modify this challenge into a character building exercise for fiction writers. XD (more…)

Picnik.com is a nifty little site for the amateur photographer, especially for those that don’t have Adobe Photoshop or other image editing software programs. Actually, even if you are a Photoshop user, you might find Picnik useful. It’s quick, easy, and lots of fun to use.
